I love it when I go somewhere I’ve been a hundred times before and see something totally new and unexpected. A few months ago I was at Pike Place Market, one of my favorite spots in Seattle, and came across a group of women all dressed in purple and red. It turned out they were from the Red Hat Society, a group of women who meet for tea wearing red hats and purple outfits. On this particular day the Vancouver, BC, chapter of the organization had made a special outing to meet up with their Seattle counterparts.
I looked up the Red Hat Society’s website and learned that it is an organization for women who want to “greet middle age with verve, humor and elan.” The Society believes “silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”
What a great concept! Apparently, the group started almost by accident but now has chapters around the world. If the smiles on the faces of the women I met at Pike Place Market are anything to go by, the Red Hat Society is an organization filled with fun and friendship.

I had read the story of its founder and how the whole thing came about. Thanks for the pictures and re-intro to the Red Hat society.
