Earlier this year I traveled to Egypt for the second time and had the opportunity to wander around Cairo’s enormous souk, the Khan al-Khalili, a warren of alleys with shops overflowing into the streets. Often the vendors would begin to harass me the moment I appeared, and I had to avoid making any response or I’d have a hard time etting away. But there were also quieter moments, such as a brief encounter – conducted entirely through gestures – with this elderly man resting on a stoop in one of the narrow passages.
