CROSSING TIME ZONES
A while back I posted a photo from my 2007 trip to on one of the most remote and mysterious islands in the world, Easter Island. That photo portrayed a classic image of the island’s lost civilization, the huge statues known as moai. Here’s another, less typical photo from the island. These colorful fishing boats were tied up in the small sheltered harbor at Hanga Roa, the only real town on the island. The vast majority of Easter Island’s residents live in Hanga Roa, which had a population of 3,304 at the time of the last official Chilean census in 2002. Logically enough, this is also where you’ll find the Mataveri Airport and most of the island’s hotels, restaurants, and services.
