When you arrive in Torres del Paine National Park in the far south of Chile, chances are some of the first animals you’ll see are the guanacos that roam the plains and lower hills of this Patagonian wilderness.
A member of the camelidae family, guanacos are one of the two wild relatives of the [...]
There are few waterfalls as majestic as Iguazu – or Iguaçu, if you prefer the Portuguese spelling – Falls along the border of Argentina and Brazil. The falls are actually anywhere from 160 to 275 separate cascades (depending on the water level) with heights of roughly 263 feet (80 meters).
Sometimes also spelled Iguassu, the [...]
Off the west coast of Sweden, not far from the Norwegian border, lies Kosterhavet National Park, the country’s first marine national park, established in September 2009. A place of great beauty, Kosterhavet boasts the highest levels of biological diversity in Sweden, with 6,000 species underwater and an equal number – mostly birds, plants, insects, [...]
This summer I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Koster Islands off the west coast of Sweden. My article about my visit has just been published in Sierra Magazine:
Rain and wind lash at my Gore-Tex as I make my way up a trail on the island of Ursholmen toward Sweden’s westernmost lighthouse. On [...]
In 1997 I made a nine-week solo backpacking trip through parts of east and southern Africa. Among the highlights was a three-day camping safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, where I photographed these zebras.
Here’s another photo from close to home, from Washington’s North Cascades. This is Mount Shuksan reflected in Picture Lake at Artist Point.
Taken in October 2007. I was in Patagonia as the tour manager for a Smithsonian Journeys group. On one of our days in Torres del Paine National Park we stopped at Laguna Amarga for some birdwatching. When I first spotted them, these flamingos were standing in the water, but I could tell they were getting [...]
Between 2003 and 2005, I cruised Alaska’s Inside Passage five times as a tour manager escorting groups aboard large cruise ships. One of the most stunning places on the itinerary was Glacier Bay National Park, where nearly a dozen tidewater glaciers – glaciers that have advanced far enough to reach the sea – calve icebergs [...]
Taken in January 2008. I was in the Galapagos Islands as the tour manager for a group from American Museum of Natural History Expeditions. We spent eight days cruising the Galapagos on a small expedition ship, stopping at various islands. This marine iguana was basking in the sun at Punta Suárez on Española (Hood) Island.
The Spanish word “torre” means “tower,” an apt name for the trio of soaring granite pinnacles that form the centerpiece of Torres del Paine National Park in remote southern Chile. In Torres del Paine, mountains rise from the windswept Patagonian plains, creating some of the most dramatic scenery on earth. Majestic peaks, including the jagged [...]
